Don’t be fooled! Javelina, also called a ‘peccary’ or musk hog, may look like a wild boar or pig, but in fact they are neither. Because of physical differences, Javelinas are in the Tayassuidae family classification and pigs are in the Suidae family. Standing 2 feet tall and weighing 20-60 pounds, peccaries are the perfect size for a potential predatory snack so they form large social groups for protection. Unlike many species on Earth which have mating seasons, female javelina can give birth to young, known as ‘reds’ due to their coat color, any time of year.
